Media is a powerful tool. With the usage of social networking and video sharing, the injustices of authoritarian regimes have gone viral. However, this great tool of free speech can be abused in the presentation of events. Previously released videos have shown the UC Davis police as committing injustice to “peaceful” protesters. We at Exposing Leftists would like to show you what really happened at UC Davis that day, courtesy of the Davis College Republicans. In the video, the students apart of #OccupyUCDavis were repeatedly told by the police to remove their tents because it violates campus policy, not because they disagree with #OccupyUCDavis. Also, before they were pepper sprayed for preventing the police from leaving, they were fully aware that the cops were going to pepper spray them. As a result of misrepresentation, #OccupyUCDavis has attacked the UC Davis Chancellor trying to remove the chancellor. It is also rumored that some students are trying to pass a petition to remove all police and fire departments from college campuses. Watch this video and share it with your friends and family so that they may know what really happened at UC Davis.

A Black Panther supporter at the University of Minnesota–Duluth recently threatened a conservative student activist for passing out free pocket constitutions, on Constitution day. The Panther told the student that he would “exercise” his second amendment right on the student’s group, if he deemed it a threat to the multicultural center. A few moments later, he says the group is a threat to the center.

Many students support affirmative action, in an effort to promote diversity. They argue that race-based preferences “level the playing field” for disadvantaged minorities. However, these same students refused to sign our petition to apply such policies to the basketball team. At UC Riverside — where the video was filmed — 10/11 active players on the team are African American. Why not use affirmative action to promote diversity there?

On December 15, 1791, the first Ten Amendments to the Constitution (the Bill of Rights) were ratified. Our founding fathers, working to create a stronger federal government than that under the Articles of Confederation, also realized that they would have to implement safeguards against authoritarian rule, while clarifying specific rights of the people. Their First Amendment was the freedom of speech. The Second Amendment provided protection of the first, and more.

In pre-rebellion times, arguing, speaking, or printing words against authority were often criminal acts, and punishable by death. Without any nonviolent recourse to actions of those in power, opposition to governments often had to turn to violence to have their demands met. Our founders realized that the freedom of dissent, and to speak one’s mind was key to the survival and stability of a constitutional republic.

Today, many want to limit the speech of those they disagree with, primarily conservative republicans. In 1949, the Fairness Doctrine was introduced under the FCC. Under Reagan, in 1987, the FCC ended the doctrine. While Democrat-controlled congresses have tried to make it law again, Republicans and those who support free speech oppose their efforts to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. To begin the limitation of political speech and dissent would lead us to a downward spiral of freedoms. As the last bastion of freedom in the world, we must fight to retain our most important right, and failure is not an option.
